What is a growkit?
If you are just starting your adventure with mycology, it is worth getting to know a few basic terms. One of the most frequently used words is growkit. In the simplest terms, a growkit is a “growth box” – a ready-made set that contains all the elements needed to cultivate a particular organism under controlled conditions.
In the context of psilocybin research and mycology, a growkit is usually a plastic container filled with a nutrient substrate already colonised by the mycelium of Psilocybe cubensis. Such a block of substrate, stored and handled in the right way, can produce fruiting bodies – psilocybin mushrooms – which are used in many countries for scientific and therapeutic research. A good-quality growkit normally includes not only the mycelium and substrate, but also an appropriate bag, clips and protective packaging that help maintain stable humidity and airflow.
To sum up, a growkit is a piece of substrate containing mature mycelium, prepared for further observation, education or research. Before buying or using any growkit, always check the legal status of psilocybin mushrooms in your country – in many places (including Poland) their cultivation and consumption is illegal and may result in criminal liability.

First contact with psilocybin mushrooms and growkits
There are European countries, such as the Czech Republic or the Netherlands, where possession of a small amount of psilocybin mushrooms (or truffles) is tolerated or legally regulated in a different way than in Poland. Even there, however, responsible organisations emphasise that proper education, medical consultation and psychological support are essential before anyone considers contact with psychoactive substances. You need to be absolutely sure this is something you want to explore and understand both the potential benefits and the risks.
When people ask “which growkit to choose for the first time?”, they usually mean the character of the experience associated with a given strain. The perceived intensity is often described on a scale of 1–5, where 5 means a very strong psychedelic experience. Different strains are associated (anecdotally) with different profiles: some are linked more with vivid visual effects, others with gentler journeys, deeper introspection and philosophical insight.
Which growkit – which mushrooms are considered milder?
For people reading about psilocybin for the first time, it is often recommended in educational sources to start by learning about milder strains such as B+, Mexican or Golden Teacher. These varieties are frequently mentioned in reports from users because they are perceived as relatively gentle and “forgiving”. In discussions, people often stress that what really matters is not only the strain, but also the broader context: set & setting (your state of mind and the environment), intentions, mental and physical health, and trusted, sober support during any legal use.
In many online guides you may come across information that first-time experimenters choose low doses, e.g. around 1–2 g of dried mushrooms, carefully weighed on a precise scale. We strongly recommend treating such descriptions as reports for educational purposes only, not as instructions. Work with psychoactive substances should only take place in countries where it is legal and preferably within a professional, clinical or therapeutic framework. More about mental and physical preparation, often referred to as set & setting, can be found in our article: how to prepare for a psychedelic journey.
Growkit B+
B+ made history as one of the most popular varieties of the 1990s. It probably originated in Florida and is associated with the mysterious mycologist known online as MR G. Why has this variety gained such a reputation? Many reports describe B+ as relatively gentle in terms of so-called undesirable effects. Users often mention that it is less likely to cause nausea compared to some other strains and is experienced as pleasant, euphoric and physically relaxing. Visual phenomena may appear, but their intensity is highly individual and depends on dose, sensitivity, environment and psychological state.
From a mycological perspective, B+ is valued for its stable colonisation and clear mycelial structures, which makes the B+ growkit a frequent choice for people who are just beginning to work with research-grade kits and want a relatively forgiving strain for microscopy and documentation.
Growkit Mexican
Mexican is often described as a “sunny” variety with a noticeably gentle profile. Its action is usually rated as moderate, which is why it is so often mentioned in discussions for people who are just beginning to read about mycology and psilocybin. Descriptions such as “warm”, “positive”, “relaxing” and “smiling” regularly appear in anecdotal reports. Historically, related mushrooms were used in ritual settings by the Aztecs, which additionally fuels interest in this strain among people fascinated by the cultural history of psilocybin.
In research and educational contexts, the Mexican growkit is often chosen by those who want to combine observation of mycelium with exploring ethnomycological background and historical sources.
Growkit Golden Teacher
The word legendary probably describes this growkit best. Its name is no coincidence: Golden Teacher is a nickname the strain has earned over the years. It is called “Golden” partly because of the characteristic golden-brown shade of the caps, and partly because many people see the “teachings” of this mushroom as particularly valuable. The “Teacher” element refers to the idea that the experience often highlights what a person most needs to see or feel at a given moment – which can be beautiful, but also emotionally demanding.
Growkit Golden Teacher is often chosen both by more experienced psychonauts and by curious beginners reading about psilocybin for the first time. It is considered relatively easy to handle from a mycological point of view, and its popularity means you can find many descriptions and research references online. If you want to explore this variety in more depth – including potential benefits, risks and legal context – you can find a separate, comprehensive article here.
The content on the psychodelicroom.pl website is educational, research-based, and expresses many opinions that should be treated with caution. We advise against using any substances that affect consciousness, as all of these substances can both heal and be very harmful. In particular, we advise against cultivating mushrooms from growkits in countries where it is illegal – including Poland – because it involves criminal liability. We recommend that you dispose of the growkits purchased from us within 72 hours of receiving them.
