Magic mushrooms – effects, risks and legality
What are magic mushrooms?
Magic mushrooms are fungi that contain naturally occurring psychedelic compounds, most notably psilocybin and psilocin. These substances can significantly alter perception, thinking and mood. In popular culture, they are often associated with visual distortions, intensified colours, changes in the sense of time and deep emotional experiences. A well-known group within this category is formed by psilocybin-containing mushrooms, sometimes cultivated (where legal) from research growkits such as Golden Teacher growkits. For more background, see psilocybin mushrooms on Wikipedia.
Some people are interested in magic mushrooms because they hope for increased creativity, new insights or a sense of spiritual connection. Others are curious about emerging clinical research on psilocybin-assisted therapy. At the same time, these substances can be psychologically overwhelming, may worsen underlying mental health conditions and, in many countries (including Poland), are illegal to possess, cultivate or use. Our perspective is purely educational and does not encourage consumption.
What happens after taking hallucinogenic mushrooms?
When people ingest psilocybin-containing mushrooms such as Golden Teacher or Mazatapec, the active compounds are absorbed and converted into psilocin. This molecule interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain and can temporarily change how different networks communicate. As a result, users often report strong alterations in perception, thought patterns and emotions.
Typical subjective reports include intensified colours, shifting patterns, changes in the perception of shapes and surfaces, and a sense that time is speeding up or slowing down. Some people describe feelings of euphoria, openness, heightened sensitivity to music and touch, as well as powerful introspection or existential insights. Others may experience confusion, fear, loss of control or the sensation that the boundaries between self and world are dissolving. This is sometimes referred to as “ego dissolution.”
The exact character of an experience depends on many factors: the species and amount of mushroom, the person’s mental and physical state, their expectations, environment and personal history. Because responses are so individual and unpredictable, serious organisations emphasise the importance of extreme caution and, in clinical contexts, careful screening and professional support.
How long do the effects of magic mushrooms last?
The duration of a mushroom experience varies, but for many psilocybin-containing mushrooms the main effects last several hours. For example, Golden Teacher is often described as having a moderate but potentially deep effect profile.
In anecdotal reports, the first noticeable changes typically appear within the first hour after ingestion, followed by a peak phase that can feel very intense. Afterwards, the effects gradually diminish and the person returns to a more usual state of consciousness. The total duration is often estimated at roughly 4–6 hours, with residual emotional or cognitive after-effects (such as tiredness or reflection) sometimes lingering longer.
Because perception and coordination can be strongly affected, people under the influence of magic mushrooms should not drive, operate machinery or undertake any activity that could endanger themselves or others. Even if someone “feels fine,” reaction time, judgement and risk perception may be impaired.
Is psilocybin dangerous to our health?
Psilocybin, the main active compound in many so-called magic mushrooms, is a powerful psychoactive substance. The question of whether it is “dangerous” does not have a simple yes/no answer – risk depends heavily on dose, context, individual vulnerability and legal environment. We discuss this in more detail in our article are psilocybin mushrooms safe.
On one hand, modern clinical trials in controlled settings have not shown psilocybin to be physically toxic at therapeutic doses, and serious physical complications appear rare. On the other hand, psychological risks can be substantial. Intense fear, paranoia, panic or disorientation – sometimes described as a “bad trip” – may occur, especially in unsafe environments or in people with a history of mental health problems. In vulnerable individuals, there is concern that psychedelics may precipitate or worsen psychotic disorders.
Legal risk is also significant: in many countries, including Poland, psilocybin is classified as an illegal drug. Possession, cultivation or sharing of psilocybin mushrooms can lead to criminal charges. This is independent of any subjective experience of benefit that some users may report and should be taken very seriously.
Are magic mushrooms legal in Poland?
In Poland, hallucinogenic mushrooms such as Golden Teacher or McKennaii are classified as psychotropic substances. Cultivation, possession and trade in psilocybin-containing mushrooms are illegal and may result in fines or imprisonment. The law applies both to fresh and dried mushrooms used for psychoactive purposes.
Some countries have adopted more liberal or experimental approaches. The Netherlands, for instance, allows the sale of certain psilocybin-containing truffles under specific regulations, and a few cities or regions worldwide have moved towards partial decriminalisation. However, these exceptions do not apply in Poland. For a broader overview of the international situation, see our article where psilocybin mushrooms are legal.
Regardless of location, it is important to distinguish between ongoing clinical research with strict safeguards and unregulated, personal use. The former takes place within clear legal and ethical frameworks; the latter can carry both legal and health-related risks.
Is a growkit with magic mushrooms legal in Poland?
In Poland, research growkits that contain mycelium but no developed fruiting bodies occupy a different legal position than fully grown psilocybin mushrooms. Growkits can be sold as products for research and collection purposes, but growing psychoactive mushrooms from them and consuming those mushrooms is illegal and may lead to criminal liability.
For this reason, we strongly advise customers living in Poland not to cultivate mushrooms from our growkits and to check the current legal status in their own country before purchase. Growkits should be treated as research material only (for example, microscopic observation of mycelium). If you have any doubts, always consult a lawyer or local regulations rather than relying on hearsay.
The content on the psychodelicroom.pl website is educational, research-based and often reflects a wide spectrum of opinions and ongoing scientific debate. We do not encourage the use of any substances that affect consciousness, as all such substances can both help and cause serious harm. In particular, we advise against cultivating mushrooms from growkits in countries where it is illegal – including Poland – because this involves criminal liability. Growkits purchased from us are intended solely for research and collection purposes, and we recommend disposing of them within 72 hours of receiving them, in accordance with local law.
