What to eat before, during and after a trip with mushrooms?

Polecane produkty

It's certainly worth putting in the effort to prepare before a psilocybin trip. The more of yourself you give, the more you can receive. Just like before the vacations. A well-packed suitcase will give us comfort and a sense of security. You pack clothes, choose music for the plane and.... food. Probably many of you have wondered what to eat before a trip? The food and drinks consumed are crucial even weeks before the psychedelic adventure.

Conscious nutrition is an important part of preparing for any unusual inner work – including a potential psychedelic experience. Long before you even consider a journey with psilocybin or other psychoactive substances, it is worth taking care of your overall lifestyle, sleep, stress level and gut health. A calm, rested body digests emotions more easily, and a balanced diet supports the nervous system and psyche. Remember that the content on this website is educational only – we do not encourage the use of psychoactive substances, and any decisions regarding your health should always be consulted with a doctor or qualified specialist.

What to eat before a trip?

Even a few weeks before a potential trip, it is worth taking a mindful look at what lands on your plate. This can be a time of gentle tuning and gradual purification. Around two weeks beforehand, many people decide to limit heavier foods – especially red meat – and reach more often for plant-based meals. In practice, this means a menu rich in fresh fruit, vegetables, easily digestible protein and wholegrain products. Light, simple dishes support digestion and may translate into more stable well-being.

Equally important is hydration. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps the body flush out metabolic by-products and supports the proper functioning of the nervous system. It is worth listening carefully to your body – it often “knows” what serves it and which products make you feel heavier and more sluggish. At the same time, it is a good idea to gradually eliminate alcohol and recreational stimulants in the period leading up to a possible psychedelic session, as they can burden the liver and destabilise mood.

Shortly before consuming magic mushrooms, many people choose to fast for about 5–6 hours – that is, not to eat solid food, but to continue drinking water or herbal infusions. Such a break from food may reduce the risk of nausea and stomach discomfort, which sometimes accompany ingestion of psilocybin mushrooms from growkits. Even with a light diet, however, digestive discomfort can still occur, which is why a safe environment, calm mindset and medical consultation are so important.

What to eat during a psychedelic trip?

Is there even time to eat during a trip? In many cases, psychedelic mushrooms “take over” attention so strongly that food moves to the very end of the priority list. Still, there are exceptions, and it’s good to prepare a few neutral options in advance. The absolute must-have is water – don’t forget to drink small sips regularly. Dehydration can intensify discomfort, headaches and fatigue after the experience.

If you feel like having a snack, the best choice is usually fresh, juicy fruit. Their texture and aroma can subtly enrich the sensory layer of the experience without overloading the stomach. Tangerines, mangoes, pineapple or oranges are often described by users as “the most delicious fruit of their lives” – as long as they manage to peel them first. Sometimes a person becomes so empathetically attached to a piece of fruit that it’s hard for them to “hurt it” by peeling it. If you can get through this stage, flavours and smells often seem extremely intense and multi-dimensional, creating an additional, sensual thread of the journey.

    Nausea after psilocybin mushrooms

Unfortunately, nausea and “stomach revolutions” are, for some people, part of the ritual in which magic mushrooms play the role of guide. This is not a rule – many sessions take place without major digestive issues – but such symptoms are common enough that it is worth being prepared for them. Some psychonauts may even experience vomiting or diarrhoea after consuming mushrooms, especially if they have a sensitive digestive system or if the mushrooms were prepared in a way that is hard to digest (e.g. heavy meals eaten together with them).

In many traditional cultures, cleansing the body is seen as part of a broader purification process, but from a medical perspective, persistent or very strong nausea is always a signal that should not be ignored. If symptoms are intense, long-lasting or accompanied by disturbing psychological phenomena, seek medical help. Once again – we do not recommend self-medicating with psilocybin, especially for people with chronic illnesses or mental health difficulties.

What to eat after a trip?

At the end of a ritual or psychedelic session, it is worth taking special, gentle care of yourself. This is the time for tenderness, rest and integration. Food can support this process. A warm drink – a mild herbal infusion, rooibos, chamomile or even warm water with a pinch of honey – will help calm the body and gradually bring you back to everyday sensations.

A post-trip meal should be nutritious but light. Good choices include:

    • fruit and berries (bananas, blueberries, oranges),
    • vegetable-based meals or delicate soups prepared the day before,
    • easily digestible protein – for example poultry, tofu, beans or lentils,
    • small portions of wholegrain cereals such as rice, millet or quinoa.

After a psychedelic experience, it’s better to avoid coffee and other strong sources of caffeine, refined sugar, heavy dairy, alcohol and additional stimulants. The nervous system is still “open” and sensitive – loading it with strong stimulants can intensify internal tension, make it harder to fall asleep or deepen the so-called “come-down”. Your body is your temple; treat it with gratitude and gentleness. Simple nutritional rituals can become an important part of psychedelic integration and help “anchor” insights in everyday life.

    Summary

What to eat before, during and after a psychedelic trip is an important element of preparation – but it is only one piece of the whole puzzle. Just as crucial are psychological readiness, a safe environment, a trusted sitter and awareness of possible risks. If you want to make sure your “suitcase” is fully packed, we recommend our article “How to prepare for a psychedelic trip? That is, everything you need to know about set & setting” . There you will find broader context on how mindset and surroundings can influence the course of a psychedelic experience.

The content on the psychodelicroom.pl website is educational, research-based, and expresses many opinions that should be treated with caution. We advise against using any substances that affect consciousness, as all of these substances can both heal and be very harmful. In particular, we advise against cultivating mushrooms from growkits in countries where it is illegal – including Poland – because it involves criminal liability. We recommend that you dispose of the growkits purchased from us within 72 hours of receiving them.
