    Warning on Magic Mushrooms

The information below is intended solely for educational and informational purposes. We do not encourage or recommend the consumption of psychoactive substances, including psilocybin mushrooms. The use of such substances can pose significant physical and mental health risks and should never be undertaken without consulting a qualified medical or mental-health professional.

Any decision to consume psilocybin must be made with full awareness of potential dangers, legal consequences and personal health risks. If you have concerns about your mental or physical wellbeing, speak with a doctor before taking any action.

    What Are Magic Mushrooms?

Most people have heard the term “magic mushrooms,” but few truly understand what distinguishes them from other fungi. Magic mushrooms are species that naturally contain psychoactive compounds, primarily psilocybin and psilocin, which are responsible for psychedelic effects. These compounds alter perception, mood and cognition, often producing profound, introspective experiences.

    Which Mushrooms Have Psychedelic Effects?

There are many species of psychoactive mushrooms, yet only those containing psilocybin and psilocin are considered “magic mushrooms.” For example, the well-known fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) is psychoactive but not a psilocybin mushroom. When discussing magic mushrooms, we focus on species such as Psilocybe cubensis, Psilocybe azurescens, Psilocybe semilanceata and many others.

    Active Ingredients in Magic Mushrooms

The proportions of psilocybin, psilocin and baeocystin vary widely between species, strains and even individual specimens. These ratios influence the intensity and character of a psychedelic experience. Some mushrooms are known for strong visual effects, others for introspective or emotional depth.

    Psilocybin – The Primary Compound

Psilocybin is the most abundant compound in dried mushrooms. Once consumed, it is metabolized into psilocin, which directly binds to serotonin receptors and produces the psychedelic effects. This conversion can also be accelerated through “lemon tek,” where psilocybin begins converting before ingestion.

    Baeocystin – The Lesser-Known Tryptamine

Baeocystin is a close analogue of psilocybin but is far less studied. Some early reports suggest mild psychoactivity, but modern research indicates the effects may be minimal when isolated. Its role likely lies in the synergistic “entourage effect” of the mushroom's full chemical profile.

Psilocin – Directly Active in the Body

Psilocin is the form that directly interacts with the brain. Fresh mushrooms and lemon-tek preparations often contain the highest proportion of psilocin, which may result in a faster and more intense onset.

How Many Species of Magic Mushrooms Exist?

Researchers estimate that more than 200 species of psilocybin-containing mushrooms exist, mainly in the genus Psilocybe. Many likely remain undiscovered or poorly described, as scientific interest in these fungi has only recently re-emerged after decades of legal restrictions.

Top 6 Most Potent Magic Mushroom Species

The potency of psilocybin mushrooms varies significantly. Below is an overview of the strongest known species. Values represent approximate percentages of active compounds in dried material and may vary.

    1. Psilocybe azurescens

Often considered the most potent magic mushroom in the world. Naturally found along the U.S. West Coast. Dried specimens may contain up to 1.8% psilocybin, 0.5% psilocin and 0.4% baeocystin. Users describe experiences as intensely visual, immersive and long-lasting.

    2. Psilocybe cubensis

The most commonly cultivated species worldwide. Many growkits — including Golden Teacher and Mazatapec — belong to this species. Potency ranges from 0.37–1.30% psilocybin and 0.14–0.42% psilocin. Ideal for beginners due to predictable results.

    3. Conocybe cyanopus

A highly potent but risky species. It resembles several deadly mushrooms and grows in similar environments. Contains approximately 0.5–1% psilocybin. Identification should be left to experts.

    4. Psilocybe samuiensis

A tropical species originally from Thailand. Its dried composition ranges from 0.023–0.90% psilocybin, 0.05–0.81% psilocin and 0.01–0.05% baeocystin. Often described as euphoric and clear-headed.

    5. Psilocybe tampanensis

Known for producing “magic truffles,” which are legal in some European countries. Mushrooms may contain up to 1% psilocybin, while sclerotia (truffles) contain around 0.68%. Experiences are often described as philosophical and emotionally warm.

    6. Copelandia cambodginiensis (Panaeolus cambodginiensis)

Found in Asia and Hawaii, often growing on buffalo dung. Dried mushrooms contain around 0.55% psilocybin and 0.6% psilocin. Known for strong visuals and rapid onset.

    Why Potency Varies

Magic mushroom potency differs not only between species but even between flushes of the same growkit. Factors include substrate quality, genetics, temperature, humidity, and mushroom maturity at harvest. For example, some Cubensis strains can be up to four times stronger than others.

Because of this variability, beginners should always start with low doses and increase gradually, especially when trying a species for the first time.

The content on the psychodelicroom.pl website is educational and research-based. We strongly advise against using psychoactive substances or cultivating psilocybin mushrooms in countries where it is illegal — including Poland, where possession of fruiting bodies is a criminal offence. Growkits should be disposed of within 72 hours of receipt.
