Blue honey, or how to make blue honey.

Blue honey – blue honey – is a very old method of preserving psilocybin mushrooms. Since ancient times, the sweet elixir was known, as a preservative. Honey was used to keep food fresh and was even used to embalm corpses. Products dipped in honey retained their values and nutritional properties. In the Egyptian tomb of King Tut – despite the passage of 3,000 long years, honey was still fit for consumption. And although there is no confirmed evidence, it is very likely that magic mushrooms were also preserved with it back in those days. Blue honey is a quick and easy way to store and dose the psilocybin contained in hallucinogenic mushrooms.

What is blue honey?

This is a common name for honey to which powdered psilocybin mushrooms have been added or pieces of these mushrooms have been dipped. Blue honey is a sweet treat with psychedelic effects. It is relatively easy to make and preserves the freshness and properties of the mushrooms. It can be stored for years or even hundreds of years – without any loss of quality.

Why is honey blue?

The hallucinogenic substance that magic mushrooms contain is psilocybin. Although honey does not turn blue when mixed with psilocybin mushrooms, the psilocybin from the mushrooms gets into the honey and causes a slight blue tint around the edges. The blue honey effect can be seen especially at the top of the jar, where the honey is more exposed to oxygen. The same effect occurs with the mushrooms themselves – blue bruises form on the stems during harvesting and handling of the fruiting bodies. The more psilocybin there is in the mushroom, the more blue spots you will see.

The history of blue honey dates back to the Neolithic?

There is little scientific confirmation of this, but it is likely that man used psilocybin mushrooms as early as Neolithic times. This can be evidenced by a cave painting at Tassili n’Ajjer in Algeria, which depicts mushroom-like elements . The drawing shows an anthropomorphic figure holding magic mushrooms. Highly likely, the shaman with a bee’s head suggests that honey was already known to be a preservative for psilocybin.

Is blue honey stronger?

Not necessarily. The potency of blue honey actually depends on the psilocybin contained in specific mushrooms, and on the variety. In addition, smaller mushrooms tend to have relatively higher psilocybin content than more grown fruiting bodies. The strength of the honey is determined by the number of grams of mushrooms added. Without a test it’s generally difficult to estimate, but if you know how many grams you’ve thrown in, you more or less know what to expect. Testing is a good idea to start with smaller portions anyway, and possibly increase later.

Who is blue honey for?

The advantage of blue honey is primarily its taste. Mushroom honey is an ideal way to consume mushrooms without having to choke on the dry stems, without having a gag reflex. Dried mushrooms are not a rarity for everyone. Blue honey is a revolution for those who struggle with the taste of mushrooms, as it masks it perfectly.

In addition to increasing the shelf life of mushrooms, dosing psilocybin with this method is easier. After calculating the dosage per jar of honey, you will be able to determine how many teaspoons should be consumed to achieve the desired effect. This is a very practical solution if you are using micro-dosing of psilocybin.

The third issue concerns speed of action, if you care about quick effects. Adding psilocybin to honey speeds up the absorption process and can lead to faster effects.

How to make blue honey?

Preparation of blue honey is very simple, it is done without heat treatment. The preparation of blue honey does not require cooking, so you do not risk damaging the mushrooms. As a result, the mushrooms will retain their maximum properties for a virtually indefinite period of time.

How to store blue honey?

Blue honey is stored, like regular honey, in a cool dark and dry place. If the mushrooms have been properly dried and the honey has the right storage conditions, the concoction has an indefinite shelf life. If you are a vegan, you can use agave syrup, the effect will be the same, and the only thing that will change is the taste.

Blue honey – step-by-step instructions

  1. Completely dry the mushrooms to ensure the long-term preservation of the blue honey. Otherwise, fermentation processes may occur inside the jar, which will spoil the concoction.
  2. Chop or grind the mushrooms as finely as possible to increase the contact of psilocybin with the honey. This can be done in several ways, although the fastest is to use a coffee grinder, can be manual or electric.
  3. Pour powdered magic mushrooms into the jar and pour the first layer of liquid honey. Then put another layer of mushrooms and so on until it is filled. Of course, the more mushrooms you add, the stronger the effect. Note: Do not heat the honey to make it more liquid. Excessive heat can cause psilocybin to break down. Alternatively, you can mix the desired amount of honey and mushrooms in a bowl and then pour it into a jar. Both methods work equally well, it just depends on whether you want to have the mushrooms distributed throughout the jar or in easily stackable layers.
  4. Cap the jar and place it in a dark, cool and dry dark place for 1-4 months. Theoretically, wait a minimum of 2 weeks before eating it. The longer you leave it, the more psilocybin will flow out and enrich the honey. This is hard to resist, but it is a long-term investment! As time passes, more psilocybin will enter the honey, so it would be ideal not to consume it for a few weeks or even leave it macerating for a few months.

Dosage of blue honey

It is a good idea to write down the amount of mushrooms and honey (e.g., 5 g of dried mushrooms per 100 ml of honey) to have a reference for the strength of a given mixture.

A proportion good for beginning experiments is 1 gram of dried mushrooms per large tablespoon of honey (a tablespoon has 15 ml). Then, instead of 2 grams of dried mushroom, you will eat two tablespoons of blue honey.

If you want to make a half-liter jar of honey, for example, you can take 40 g of dried mushrooms and 400 ml of honey (of liquid consistency). Adjust the proportions according to the desired strength. One common mistake is to measure the proportions incorrectly, which can lead to a weaker or too strong concoction. So remember that accuracy is key here. Once you’ve determined the ideal dosage, you can add a little more mushroom powder to the jar instead of adding more honey to get a better result. As soon as you pass the moment of choosing the right dose – you can be satisfied, because taking mushrooms will become much simpler and more pleasant, and making each subsequent honey will become a routine.

Risks when consuming blue honey

Psilocybin mushrooms in any form are capable of altering our consciousness and perception. You can experience visual and auditory hallucinations, awaken anxiety, and lower your mood. Magic mushrooms should only be administered by trained medical personnel and in consultation with a doctor. Read more about the benefits and risks here.

We do not encourage or even discourage the use of any means of influencing consciousness, all of which can both cure and do great harm. In particular, we advise against growing mushrooms from growkits in countries where it is illegal – min. in Poland – because it involves criminal liability. We recommend that growkits purchased from us be disposed of 72 hours after receipt.
